Discover a magical site with incredible autumnal hues in Couserans.

Hi! I'm Allison, and I love going hiking on the weekends to discover new places! Especially with the fall colors appearing. It's spectacular! So I'm taking you for a day to discover this heritage gem hidden in the middle of nature: Les cabanes de Goutets.

Let's go !
Hamlet Le Carol

We begin the hike in the very cute and picturesque hamlet of "Le Carol". Here we have the impression that time has stood still with its paths carved in stone, its old-fashioned mailbox and its washhouse beautifully decorated with flowers by the locals.

Quickly, we plunge into the sparse forest of trees of all colors, mossy rocks, and streams. We walk, through the rays of the sun, on a soft carpet of pumpkin-colored leaves, with the flavor of childhood.

The path is dotted with stone barns, each one as unique as the next, which pique our curiosity: rustic, in ruins, restored, modernized, abandoned, ornate, with roofs shaped like birds' feet...

Arriving in the Cirque des Trois Seigneurs, we discover the first "Orris" (they are like igloos but made of stone. This allowed the shepherds to store their food but also to protect the animals during high temperatures) with a breathtaking view of the mountains topped by the majestic "Mont Valier".

We gambol between the authentic little shepherds' huts like goats with the feeling of having stepped back in time.

The Goutets huts
Here we are !

Finally arriving at the Goutets cabins, an authentic and exceptional architectural heritage, all the magic is revealed to us. We enter these hamlets which follow one another, crossed by a small enchanting river, like the hobbit village in "the Shire" where we imagine all the pastoral dynamics in this place so serene today.

We hope that this dream does not end, but we have to go back and we go back down quietly into the forest to find the crystalline sound of the Fontfrède stream.

Tips

– The hike starts at the Foulie car park, below the Carol hamlet, as there is no space to park or turn around there.
– You will find picnic tables at the Cabanes de Goutets.
– Once you arrive in the cirque, there is no shade. So remember to take a good water bottle and your cap!

The restoration of the Goutets huts was selected for the heritage lottery, which encourages the preservation of endangered sites. If you want to know more, it's here: Restoration of the cabins
