In the heart of the village of Castillon, in the Couserans region, a boutique unlike any other is forging links between artisans, producers, and residents. Meet Clémence, a founding member of "L'Écho des Montagnes," a project born from post-Covid solidarity that has become a must-see place for consuming differently.

How did the “L'Écho des Montagnes” adventure begin?

It all started almost by chance, after the pandemic. We were a small group of 6 to 8 local artisans and producers participating in a Christmas market. The atmosphere, the collective energy, the enthusiasm of the public… it made us want to go further. We said to ourselves: “What if we created a permanent place, in our image?”
With the support of Castillon Town Hall, the project quickly took shape. What drove us was the desire to work together, to create a collective, vibrant, and useful place for the region. This desire still drives us today.
So it's more than just a shop after all?

Exactly. "L'Écho des Montagnes" is a lively place. People come here to buy local products, of course, but also to chat, discover new skills, and participate in events. You'll meet both regulars and curious tourists.
You'll find everything there! Everything! Jewelry, illustrated cards, pottery, wool, but also everyday products: seasonal fruits and vegetables, eggs, bread, pâtés... And even coffee or herbal teas at a price you can't afford. The producers themselves set the prices, to guarantee fair compensation.

You were a craftswoman yourself. What did this project mean to you?
I was a seamstress, based in Biros. I discovered the pleasure of getting involved in collective projects through the world of crafts. For me, "L'Écho" is a concrete way to act in the world in my own way, on my own scale. It's consistent with my values: mutual aid, local, and commitment.
How does the association work on a daily basis?
We operate as a collegiate office: each exhibitor becomes a member and takes part in decision-making. Today, there are about fifty of us, mainly local producers and artisans. Each contributes a percentage of their turnover, adjusted according to their involvement in the association's office hours or life.

This participatory model allows us to remain independent, while ensuring true solidarity among us. Every day, we learn to organize, cooperate, and manage together.
You also organize events. Can you tell us more?
Of course! We're not just a place to sell. We organize night markets, a spring fair, a Christmas market, and even the village garage sale. These events combine artisans, food trucks, concerts, and more. They strengthen social ties and also provide financial support to the association.

A final word for those who don't yet know "L'Écho des Montagnes"?
Come see us, push open the door. You'll find much more than objects: stories, passionate people, a spirit of cooperation. That's what "L'Écho des Montagnes" is all about: a place that feels good, in every sense of the word.
