Spring is here, and with it, the urge to put away the skis and quickly get out the mountain bike is strong. Anthony shares his tips for making the most of the trails in the Couserans region.

When I talk about the Couserans, I always do so with a slight smile. This territory has been... for over ten years. FFC certifiedAnd honestly, you can feel it from the very first pedal strokes. Here, you're riding on a true playground for mountain biking enthusiasts: mainly cross-country loops, but also some great enduro trails and descents to Guzet as soon as the season allows. Everything is there, well-maintained, marked… ready to be explored.

But as is often the case in the mountains, you have to adapt to the conditions. At the beginning of the season, for example, I wanted to tackle the "Grand Huit" trail from Seix… and the Bouirex peak was still quite snowy. In those situations, it's best to stay below 1200 meters. And believe me, it's not a problem: between the trails north of Saint-Girons with incredible panoramic views of the Pyrenees, and the shorter loops to the south around Seix—like Rapheu or Baubère—there's already plenty to enjoy.

At this time of year, it's also important to remember that nature is reclaiming its space. Even though the Green Brigades patrol regularly, it's not uncommon to encounter branches or trees blocking the trails. Nothing insurmountable, but it does require vigilance and maintaining a safe distance.

A little tip from fellow enthusiasts: don't rely too much on the trail colors. Here, even a blue-rated route can quickly become technical, especially downhill. That's part of the charm of the Couserans region… authentic, demanding terrain, but incredibly rewarding.

Lately, I've also seen the area evolving, and as a cycling enthusiast, that's really gratifying. There's a real effort underway to rethink and enhance the mountain biking trails by 2027… and clearly, it's going to be fantastic once it's implemented.

While waiting for the Enduro-style circuits, I can only advise you to take a look at Trailforks Zooming in on the Couserans region reveals some real gems. And then there are the locals… those who ride here all year round. The club Mountain bike alternative is a great resource, just like the Charlie Chaussedoux's YouTube channelA passionate local enduro rider. You can feel the passion in every track, in every video.

For all e-MTB riders, there's plenty of opportunity here to have fun racking up the kilometers and elevation gain, without necessarily tackling highly technical descents. Personally, I like to combine several green and blue FFC (French Cycling Federation) loops north of Saint-Girons for long rides. And if you're looking for smoother routes, between small roads and tracks, the travel advisors at the Couserans Pyrénées tourist office are excellent resources. Don't forget the accommodations with the Accueil Vélo (Cyclists Welcome) label, like the Camping d'Audinac, where Bruno and Bénédicte are happy to share their favorite spots… tried and tested.

And then there are green, accessible trails for families to ride together without pressure, just for the pleasure of being outdoors. That's also part of the spirit of mountain biking here: everyone finds their own path, at their own pace.

What I particularly appreciate is being able to find routes all over the Couserans region. No matter where you're staying, you can hop on your bike and go for a ride almost directly from your accommodation. No need to drive for miles; everything is within easy cycling distance.

So yes, the Couserans region is currently developing this aspect… but the main thing remains the same: the pleasure of cycling in a protected environment. And as always, a little reminder that's part of the game: we share the trails. Respect hikers, livestock… and enjoy.

See you very soon on the trails of Couserans, and above all… have great rides everyone!
