The Stag's Bellow... have you ever heard it in real life? No? Well... now is the time! For about a month, and until mid-October, the bellow of the stag resonates in our Couserans valleys: it's the mating season.

What is the bellowing of a deer?
It's important to know that a doe is only fertile for a very short period . Needless to say, for the stag, there's no question of letting his chance slip away! It's at this moment that his famous cry echoes through the Pyrenees forests: the stag's bellow . An impressive cry that serves, in particular, to intimidate other males.
Guaranteed thrills!
Let's go for an experience we love to have in the autumn in the Couserans: going to listen to the stag's bellow in the heart of the Ariège Pyrenees.
We start with a lovely hike in the Couserans in the middle of the afternoon. Around us, the forest gradually dresses itself in yellow, orange and red, mushrooms begin to appear and the peaks of the Pyrenees are outlined between the trees… No doubt about it, autumn is definitely here!
And we have to admit it: it's one of our favorite seasons to enjoy the Couserans , which is only 2 hours from Toulouse.

It's in the evening, at nightfall , that you're most likely to hear deer signaling their presence. And that's perfect: it's also the ideal opportunity to admire a sunset over the Pyrenees!
We settle down in silence at the edge of the forest and enjoy the last rays of light on the Couserans mountains. Little by little, darkness falls and the stag's bellow intensifies in the heart of the forest…
The forest comes alive, and we hear the intimidating cries all around us. What an awe-inspiring feeling! The forest suddenly seems to spring to life, and the bellowing of the stags echoes all around us . The intimidating cries answer each other in the heart of the woods… What a feeling!
💡 Good to know
To remain discreet To maximize your chances of witnessing the deer rut in the Pyrenees, leave perfume at home and avoid bright or fluorescent clothing. And as with all of nature's most beautiful spectacles: turn off your cell phones and simply enjoy the moment.
Also remember to slip some into your bag :
– a pair of binoculars,
– a headlamp,
– good hiking shoes
– and a light sweater.
In the mountains, in the Couserans region of Ariège, autumn evenings can quickly become chilly, especially at nightfall!
Places to go to listen to the deer rutting call
It's important to know that a "good spot" to settle down and listen to the stags bellowing in the Pyrenees is precious... and not so easily shared. These little secret spots are almost as well guarded as mushroom hunting grounds!

Without giving too much away, a few spots in the Couserans and Ariège regions offer the chance to hear the stags bellowing. A walk at dusk near the Royal Forest of Sainte-Croix-Volvestre or Lake Mondély can hold some wonderful surprises. And for the more adventurous, a night in a cabin near the Chapelle de l'Izard , in the heart of the Pyrenees, promises an even more immersive experience.
Corn (Mais) WARNINGS,
The rutting call of the deer remains, above all, a wild spectacle best observed from a distance. Every year in France, accidents occur, particularly when people try to get too close to the deer to observe or photograph them. During the rutting season, a stag can be unpredictable and doesn't appreciate competition… It would be a shame if he mistook you for a rival!
To enjoy the spectacle safely and discover some "golden spots" known to locals , let yourself be guided by a mountain guide!
A friendly gathering to listen to the stag's bellow in the Ariège Pyrenees and learn more about this majestic animal and the Couserans mountains. Plenty of stories to tell!
