For over 40 years, the enthusiasm of singers of all levels for the Massat-Musique-Montagne choral workshop has not waned.
This year, a particularly joyful and sparkling program with orchestra
with strings, trumpets, timpani, piano and even bandoneon: Short Mass in Bb
and Dixit Dominus by Mozart, Misatango by Palmeri. Direction Claire Suhubiette,
Mozart Orchestra of Toulouse.
Dixit and Magnificat KV 193 in C major
The Dixit and Magnificat seem to reconnect with the Baroque aesthetic, as if echoing the Venetian style of the 17th century. It is the first of three scores composed by Mozart for solemn vespers during his Salzburg period.
The major sections of the two biblical texts are underlined by changes in tone that accentuate the solemnity of the whole. The majesty and joy that emanate from them are due in large part to the presence within the orchestra of the two trumpets and the timpani, but also to the brilliant choral writing itself, to the variety of which the brief interventions of the soloists contribute.
Missa brevis in B flat Major KV 275
Its title of "short mass" is explained by its moderate length and the simplicity of the means employed. The melodic inspiration is frank and almost popular, and the orchestra is reduced to a minimum, although Mozart draws all the expressive possibilities from it. Each prayer is the subject of a single number, in which soloists and choir intervene alternately, with the exception of the Sanctus, sung by the choir alone, the second part of which, Benedictus, is treated in the form of an aria for solo soprano.
Misatango
Martin Palmeri is the author of Misa a Buenos Aires, known as Misatango, created in 1996.
This is a choral mass with tango sounds. It is composed using the same movements as a classical Latin mass, blending with the harmonics and syncopated rhythms of tango. The composer also introduces the emblematic tango instrument, the bandoneon, as a soloist alongside a string orchestra (violins, violas, cellos and double bass) and the piano. A solo mezzo-soprano part punctuates the work, responding to the mixed choir.
