Transhumance in Bellongue

For the fourth year, our team made up of breeders, herders and volunteers is mobilized to offer everyone a summer pasture ascent full of sharing and exchanges around our pastoral traditions.

2026 is a special marker. It is, in fact, the International Year of Pastoralism.
An initiative in an economic context that highlights the know-how and role of our farmers at the heart of climate change, biodiversity, and food security.
Our transhumance has always been part of this reality.
We, shepherds, breeders, and livestock farmers, wish to share our customs and know-how with you, the public and consumers.
For this fourth edition, we expect many of you to accompany the local breeds of sheep, horses, Pyrenean donkeys and also Comtois horses from the heart of our village Saint LARY towards the Col de l'Herbe Soulette, gateway to the magnificent summer pasture of Estremailles dominated by the Pic de la Calabasse.
This high point, which is the viewpoint of the valley, opens up the horizon to 360°.
Far from intensive practices, our animals will benefit for four months from a wild and preserved natural environment.

Bring water and hiking gear

PROGRAM :
7am Coffee break in the village of Saint Lary 09 before the herd departs
7:30 am: Departure of the herds, the horses will lead the way followed by the Tarasconnaise sheep.
10am Breakfast break for the farmers
13 p.m.: Aperitif offered upon arrival at the summer pasture, followed by lunch (by reservation) or a packed lunch of your choice.
13pm-16pm Several activities planned during the afternoon, Les Cigales and Les Tradadou
Descent
21pm Dinner (reservations required) and evening entertainment with DJ LIGHT of NIGHT and BANDA band

FAQ
Where to park the car? In the village: 2 parking lots will be open for the transhumance (2 fields open, one at the entrance and one at the exit of the village).
What time should we arrive? Approximately 45 minutes before the herds depart.
How long is the walk? What is the elevation gain?
- From St Lary to Osque du Couret: 8km, 2h30 walk, 460m elevation gain
-From Osque du Couret to Herbe Soulette: 4km, 2 hours of walking and 400m of elevation gain
- So from St Lary to Herbe Soulette: approximately 12 km / 4h30 walking time / 860 m elevation gain
If we have a campervan/converted van, where can we sleep? Open fields at the entrance and exit, accessible for campervans or vans.
Are there shuttle services? Do I need to book? Yes, no booking required: 1 large bus to Osque, then from Osque to Herbe Soulette: shuttle service available. Shuttles and buses are provided for both the outbound and return journeys - Shuttle fare applies
