St. Lizier

Visit to the superb Saint-Lizier Cathedral, its cloister and the Bishops' Treasury.

Saint-Lizier, an ancient Gallo-Roman city, became the seat of an important bishopric. The cathedral of Saint-Lizier dates from the 11th century. The chevet is composed of Gallo-Roman reused pieces. In the apse, a monumental collection of frescoes from the 11th century constitutes "the first great Romanesque paintings to have come down to us in the Pyrenees region." In the northern apse, a collection of frescoes from the 12th century illustrates the Heavenly Jerusalem.
The Romanesque cloister is topped by a gallery, added in the 14th century.
The Treasure of the Bishops of Saint-Lizier presents a collection of valuable goldwork, the centerpiece of which is the bust of Saint-Lizier, in chased silver and dating from the Renaissance.

Meet at the Couserans Pyrénées Tourist Office office in Saint-Lizier
