From the town of Saint-Lizier to the Bethmale valley, a circuit in the heart of the Ariège Pyrenees Regional Natural Park, an absolute must-see!
PROGRAM
Morning – Guided tour of the Romanesque complex and the 18th century pharmacy.
The magnificent Saint-Lizier Cathedral, decorated with one of the most beautiful sets of Romanesque frescoes in the French Pyrenees, is supported by the only Romanesque cloister still standing in Ariège. By discovering this ensemble, you will also have the opportunity to admire the Bishops' Treasury, some of which even date back to the 10th century!
Then continue with your guide in theold pharmacy preserved as is. You won't have any trouble imagining nuns in the 18th century using this arsenal: from surgical tools to earthenware, including glassware and remedies with curious names. Listen to Dimitri tell you about the evolution of medical practices over the centuries, from dog oil to today's paracetamol!
Midi : Lunch at the “Côté Jardin” restaurant offering a beautiful view of the Pyrenean peaks. In this traditional family restaurant you will enjoy generous cuisine that showcases the land and local producers while respecting the seasons.
Afternoon : Demonstration visit of the last clog maker in Bethmale. In the small, typical village of Aret, the last clog maker of Bethmale works in his workshop overlooking the valley. Pascal Jusot, artisan clog maker, makes his clogs entirely by hand, from finding the ideal tree to carve his work to the typical decoration of the valley. Discover this unique expertise and the ancient legend that explains their distinctive pointed shape.
Tasting break at the Le Moulin Gourmand cheese dairyAfter woodworking, a stop at the cheese dairy is a must! Step into this small family business and taste the wide range of mountain cheeses and various regional dishes (millas, ravioli). A treat!
