Romanesque art road trip

We'll take you for three days to wander from valley to valley and discover the Romanesque treasures of Couserans. From iconic sites to lesser-known gems, you'll be amazed!

Day 1: Visit to a major site in Occitanie and a unique place in Ariège

The medieval town of Saint-Lizier

The morning begins in the Gallo-Roman town of Saint-Lizier, a timeless village where two cathedrals stand side by side: Notre Dame-de-la-Sède, nestled in the former episcopal palace, now a museum, and Saint-Lizier Cathedral, the people's church with its Romanesque cloister with finely sculpted capitals.

Also nearby, don't miss the perfectly preserved 13th century pharmacy: a rare visit, to be organized with the tourist office.

Combelongue Abbey

In the afternoon, head to Rimont to visit Combelongue Abbey and its remarkable gardens. The Saint-Lizier/Combelongue duo offers two perspectives on Romanesque art: one popular, rich in figurative frescoes, the other scholarly, based on symbols, shapes, and numbers. Two complementary approaches to the same art, not to be missed.

Day 2: Discovering the heritage of Castillon

On this second day of travel, en route to the valleys of Castillonnais! Two options are available to you (choose, you won't have time to do everything): Via Moulis, with the church of Luzenac, its Romanesque apse and its restored frescoes of Byzantine and Mozarabic inspiration. Or via a slight detour via Montgauch, where the church seduces with its ochre chevet and its 12th century frescoes. In Arrout, a stop is essential: its 19th century church hides a sculpted portal from the 13th century, vestige of a Templar chapel decorated with masks and snakes. In Castillon-en-Couserans, climb to the Saint-Pierre chapel, an old castle chapel perched with a breathtaking view. Remarkable sculpted architecture (key to be requested at the town hall only in the morning).

Church of Audressein

You can take the opportunity to discover the church of Audressein, listed as a World Heritage Site for its connection to Compostela. The porch is decorated with beautiful frescoes, even if the Romanesque art is no longer visible there.

In the afternoon, head to the Biros Valley. In Balacet (small roads!), admire a charming little building with a view of the peaks. Then in Sentein, the fortified church is impressive: a mauve sandstone bell tower, 16th-century frescoes, and a rare Romanesque portal.

Finish at Ourjout (open Wed-Sat-Sun, 15pm-18pm, in summer): a pretty bridge leads you to a church with a remarkable sculpted portal, populated with human and animal figures.

Day 3: Heritage tour of the Haut-Couserans

Salau Church

Start in Salau, where the church captivates with its simplicity. Partially destroyed during a flood in 1982, it was rebuilt identically using medieval techniques, and an on-site exhibition chronicles this renaissance step by step. For lunch, head to the nearby Auberge des Deux Rivières. The address is renowned, the food delicious. Remember to make a reservation.

Church of Saint-Lizier d'Ustou

For the afternoon, head to Ustou, dominated by the Saint-Lizier-d'Ustou church and its elegant bell tower. Then stop at the entrance to Ercé: the modest Saint-Pierre chapel houses a precious Romanesque portal with symbolic motifs. In the village, the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption parish church, with its 18th-century façade, retains a Romanesque apse in its chevet.

Church of Vic d'Oust

Finally, in Oust, don't miss the Notre-Dame de Vic church, one of the most imposing Romanesque buildings in the Couserans. Its nave, decorated with 16th-century frescoes, combines biblical scenes, symbols, and expressive figures in a collection of rare beauty.
