Road trip on the Pyrenees road

From the foothills to the mountains: a week to discover the Couserans valleys.

Day 1: Piedmont

Morning: Visit to the village of Tourtouse . It boasts an interpretive trail that will help you discover this historical gem. This typical Couserans village has a unique feature: it is built around a feudal mound, creating a medieval atmosphere. It once housed the bishops of Saint-Lizier during the summer.

Afternoon : Walk in the Royal Forest . Dating back to the Ice Age, it's unique in Europe. You don't see anything like it everywhere! The fir trees in this forest were used for the masts of the Royal Navy. A forest rich in wild flora that you can discover as you walk. And who knows, perhaps you'll even spot some delicious milk-cap mushrooms (edible mushrooms) for your evening meal!

Night : Parking at Saint-Lizier or the bed and breakfast " Le Jardin Bleu " in Saint-Girons

Day 2: Saint-Lizier and Saint-Girons

Morning : This time we're giving you two options: a leisurely stroll through the village, because it truly is the prettiest village in the area, steeped in history, with two cathedrals, a cloister, the Bishops' Palace, and narrow streets that invite you to lose yourself in the past. Or, for the more athletic : a hike to the Tuc de Montcalivert . The Tuc de Montcalivert offers a 360° view of the Ariège Pyrenees mountain range. Starting from the village of Saint-Lizier, the round trip takes about 3.5 hours with an elevation gain of 337 meters. On your return, you'll follow the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago) and pass through the charming fortified town of Montjoie-en-Couserans. A must-do!

Afternoon : Departure for an adventure with the Via Ferrata . Horizon Vertical invites you to discover the Couserans region through its Roc'Aventur . Along the route, various modules are offered, such as cliff climbing with small iron steps to facilitate the more difficult sections, cable sections with overhead handholds for added support, ladders, and wooden obstacles.

Night : The garden of Moulis / Parking area next to the Saint-Girons aquatic center.

Day 3: Castillon Valley

Morning : Stop at the Moulin Gourmand shop . Moulin Gourmand is a family business with expertise passed down through generations. They produce Tome des Pyrénées, commonly known as Bethmalais, with distinctly local flavors—a cheese typical of our region. As you can imagine, it's a must-try. The cheese is made on the other side of the river, in a small stone house. What more can I say, except try it for yourself!

Afternoon : Head towards the Col de le Core , which offers a breathtaking view of the Bethmale Valley and the Haut-Salat Valley (your next destination). On your way, stop at Lake Bethmale for a visit to this must-see spot. Especially in autumn, the array of colors is magnificent! Then, take the opportunity to visit our clog maker, one of the few in France still practicing this traditional craft. He will explain the techniques behind this craft, so typical of the Couserans region.

Night : Parking at the Col de la Core or the Auberge l'Escaleta in Seix.

Day 4: Upper Salat Valley

Morning : Hike in the Estours Valley . Starting from the hamlet of Estours, head towards the Arcouzan Waterfall, which plunges over 70 meters. This hike through lush green forests and along the banks of an emerald-colored river offers a breathtaking panorama of Mont Valier, the majestic peak of the Couserans region. You'll be amazed, that's for sure!

Afternoon: Visit the village of Seix . A gem nestled in the heart of the Couserans region, possessing a timeless charm. Surrounded by majestic mountains, this typical Couserans village is steeped in history that will transport you through time. Whether you're seeking adventure or cultural discoveries, Seix has everything to satisfy you.

Night : Parking in Guzet or at the "La Marmotte" apartment in Aulus-Les-Bains.

Day 5: Garbet Valley

Morning : Hike to the Ars Waterfall . For hiking enthusiasts and lovers of beautiful scenery, we highly recommend heading to this waterfall. Stretching over 246 meters in height, it is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Pyrenees.

Afternoon: The village of Cominac . Head towards the village of Cominac. Located on the heights above the village of Ercé, it offers an exceptional view of the mountain range. It features houses with stepped roofs, made of schist slabs called Peyrous, allowing the inhabitants access to the roof ridge.

Night : Parking at Col d'Agnes or in the "La Marmotte " apartment in Aulus-Les-Bains.

Day 6: Massat Valley

Morning: Visit to the Courtal de Peyre Auselere . After descending the Col d'Agnes towards the Étang de Lers, head towards the village of Massat to discover this unique courtal. There you will find Orris (like igloos made of stone) which were used in the past to store butter and dairy products. They could also be used to shelter animals during storms or periods of extreme heat. And it's also an opportunity to relax by the river for a moment of tranquility surrounded by nature!

Afternoon : Caving activity with Objectif Spéléo . With over 25 years of experience, Nicolas will take you to discover the caves of the Couserans region and its rock formations dating back more than 300 million years, created 50km underground. A blend of caving and geology for a unique outing.

Night : Chalet de la Mésange or Col de la Crouzette.

Day 7: Séronnais Valley

Morning : Hike on the Monsteron loop . This hike, located in the hills above the village, offers a view of the ruins of Saint-Barthélemy Castle. You'll also have the opportunity to discover a magnificent panorama of the Séronnais Valley. You can also take the opportunity to visit the reptile farm, which raises more than 200 species of reptiles in a natural setting.

Afternoon: Visit to Combelongue Abbey and its remarkable gardens. This former abbey, founded in 1138 by the Count of Pallars, is an unmissable Romanesque historical site steeped in history. You'll find pure and symbolic sculpted decoration, with architecture influenced by Mudéjar styles. And you can take the opportunity to explore its gardens, which have been awarded the "Remarkable Garden" label. A true Couserans treasure! (Don't forget to call ahead to book).

Note : Make a delicious stop at " Chez Victor ," a must-visit restaurant. With onion soup as its signature starter, this place will bring back fond memories of Sunday meals at our grandmothers' houses.

So, it's the end of your seventh day, time to head home! On your way back, we highly recommend taking the road that passes by the Mas d'Azil cave, it's a must-see, even if you don't stop... trust us!
