Road Trip: the Pyrenean Piedmont

1 hour from Toulouse: a week to discover the Couserans foothills, in all seasons!

The roads in the Couserannais foothills are not subject to winter closures like those in the high mountains... So you can enjoy them all year round! We've thought of everything for you... and here's what we're offering.

Day 1: Hiking in a forest unique in Europe

Morning Once you've taken the A64, take exit 23 “Cazères” towards Sainte-Croix-Volvestre. We suggest a short stop in the village of Sainte-Croix-Volvestre, where you can stretch your legs around the lake in this small Couserans village, and even take a dip in the summer.

Afternoon : A few minutes drive from the village is the royal forest, a forest as old as time, or almost, because it dates back to the Ice Age! Several hiking trails are located there and you will finally be able to discover this forest, unique in Europe. The fir trees that make it up were used for the masts of the Royal Navy. A place rich in wild flora and mushrooms (for those who love them!) that you will discover as you walk. It's really worth doing!

Where to stay? At the Sainte-Croix-Volvestre motorhome area (on a meadow, at the edge of a forest) or for one night at Nanou and Ju's with swimming pool and Nordic bath.

Day 2: Visit to a medieval village and views of the Pyrenees.

Morning : We take the road again towards a medieval village in Couserans: tourtous. With its fortified ramparts and feudal mound, which makes this village unique, as well as its keep, it will take you on a journey through time. On site, the interpretive trail passes through the hamlets and the countryside, composed of around ten explanatory panels, will help you discover this historical gem. Take the road towards from the Barjac plateau is a must-see. You will be able to admire a large part of the Ariège Pyrenees mountain range. Simply exceptional! Take the opportunity to make a detour to the village of Bagert which also offers a magnificent view of the Pyrenees, almost 360°; For your lunch you can make a gourmet stop at the Betchat bistro offering local cuisine.

Afternoon : After a delicious meal at the Bistro de Betchat, which offers tasty local cuisine, set off to explore the Couserans Gates TrailThis archery course, ideal for the whole family, transforms you into a real Robin Hood, while allowing you to enjoy a friendly moment in the heart of nature. Archery is a perfect activity to recharge your batteries, reconnect with nature and clear your mind, while admiring the breathtaking view of the Piedmont mountains.

Where to stay? Parking in the medieval town of Saint-Lizier or at the bedroomhosts The Blue Garden. And along the way, take a break at the Compass Brewery, located in the village of Taurignan-Vieux. The passionate chefs who work there will warmly welcome you to let you taste their specialties, prepared with love and expertise.

Day 3: Hike to the Tuc de Montcalivert and visit to Saint-Lizier

Morning : On this 3rd day on the roads of Couserans, we suggest you explore the medieval city par excellence of Couserans: St. Lizier. It houses the only Romanesque cloister in the department, as well as two cathedrals! In season, you can visit a real Pharmacy from the 18th century (guided tours only). It is one of our well-preserved gems. And by visiting the Bishops' Palace, you will be an expert on the history of the region, and you will have seen the Sistine Chapel of Ariège! In conclusion... Getting lost in the cobbled streets of Saint Lizier is a real joy!

Afternoon : Tuc de Montcalivert is the hike to do in the valley. Once you reach the summit, you'll see a breathtaking and well-deserved view. It's a superb sunset spot. But don't delay getting back on track once the sun is no longer in sight. It's a natural spectacle not to be missed!

Where to stay? You can leave your suitcases at the Jardin Bleu for those who do not wish to move, but be aware that the Moulis Garden guest house It's definitely worth the trip. And then you'll be there for the next day.

Day 4: Exploring the underground tunnels of Couserans and a remarkable viewpoint

Morning : We activate the underground mode to discover the underside of the Couserans for a caving activity with Horizon Vertical. In winter, you might be warmer inside these Couserans cavities than on the snowy mountainside, but still remember to take a good sweater!

Afternoon : Heading to the Chapel Saint-Michel which offers a lovely view of the Castillonais valleys. You can also take the opportunity to make a short stop at Gourmet Mill to bring back some taste memories of your visit to Couserans.

Day 5: Exploring the ruins of Durban Castle and visiting Combelongue Abbey

Morning : Discover this unique historical gem in Couserans: Combelongue AbbeyThis former abbey, founded in 1138 by the Count of Pallars, is an unmissable Romanesque historical site steeped in history. It boasts pure and symbolic sculpted decoration, with architecture influenced by Mudéjar styles. Take the opportunity to explore its gardens, which have been awarded the "Remarkable Garden" label. At lunchtime, you can enjoy a delicious meal at the restaurant. The good old-fashioned way"Traditional cuisine made from local produce. They also have a shop if you'd like to take some tasty souvenirs home with you."

Afternoon : Visit the ruins of Durban Castle. This castle, dating from the 11th century, will immerse you in the history of this bishopric family. The main tower, the main building, and its Romanesque church below are said to have been built during this period. And the view is, well, rather pleasant... you'll see.

Day 6: Hike to historical sites and relaxation session in Mondely

Morning : Hiking the Alzen chapelThis is a short hike starting from Alzen, a small village in the foothills. Along the way, you can discover magnificent landscapes overlooking the Toulouse plain while enjoying the historical remains. Bring a picnic!

Afternoon To end the day surrounded by nature, on your way back we suggest a short stop at Mondely Lake Enough to give you plenty of good energy before getting back on the road.
