Staffed mountain refuges allow you to hike for several days, finding the comfort of a bed, a warm welcome from the wardens... and often their talents to fill your hungry belly! What a pleasure to take off your shoes and enter what seems to us at that moment a true little paradise, an oasis of conviviality. Not to mention the sunsets and sunrises!
We have two shelters on the Couserans : the Estagnous refuge, on main access route to Valier, “the lord of Couserans”, and the Arraing pond refuge above Sentein.
Le Bassiès refuge near Aulus-les-Bains is very easily accessible from the Coumebière plateau. And several nearby Spanish refuges allow for lovely cross-border loops, while enjoying the exoticism of Spanish culture in the mountains.
Stopover gîtes are rather in the middle mountains around 1000m and also allow for comforting breaks on itinerant hikes, such as the GR10, or even the GR de Pays.
Run by mountain enthusiasts, often multi-active farmers, they form a relevant network in Couserans, also for donkey treks for example, or in horse riding.
