Electrically assisted bicycles (EABs) are gradually becoming a part of the two-wheeled landscape, so we tested them for you in our mountains!

This summer I'm testing electric in the mountains!

What are the differences with a classic bike?

  • The weight : heavier (around 25 kg), these bikes adopt a more powerful braking system, with discs, and a frame incorporating more efficient suspensions.
  • Battery : now lithium, it is largely responsible for the excess weight, it is removable for recharging on the mains.
  • The engine: on the front wheel, rear wheel, or integrated into the bottom bracket. Several brands have specialized in its manufacture.
  • There are some same varieties than classic bikes: city bike, mountain bike (MTB), all-terrain bike (ATV) and folding bike.

How does it work?

Just like a bike! That is, you always have to pedal! Except that several assistance modes are available: economy / normal / boost. Battery life will vary depending on this selection and depending on the model.

Test results in Couserans!

  • For occasional cyclists, or regular but in flat country, we can do long distances with a difference in level without getting tiredThe journeys are less demanding, the hills can be climbed with less effort, the wind is no longer a problem. With little training, you can make a beautiful circuit by crossing a pass, or even several! We are currently working on the destination Couserans to list the most beautiful loops to do by electric bike.
  • In sports practice (mountain bike as well as road bike), the climbs are easier to overcome. For everyone, it is a way of'go further, higher, faster', without having to follow an overly rigorous training plan. Riding downhill on an electric mountain bike remains a lot of fun, with long-travel suspension that brings you close to the sensations of going downhill on a motorbike, without the noise!
  • Finally, and this is not the least of its qualities, the electric bike is ideal for resuming or continuing a physical activity when you have a health problem: it is a godsend for cycling enthusiasts who have aged or who are physically weakened, but who want to continue riding in the mountains.

In conclusion, we are won over!
